The Adventure Begins

Busy schedule for us 13 American journalists in Berlin. We met this morning over breakfast and learned a little bit about one another. It is a very diverse group: nationality, racially, age, workplace. We have television producers, a couple of anchors from big and small markets. Lots of public radio folk, from DC and the south. A couple of Voice of America journalists.

Several in our group have done these fellowships before. Who even knew they existed! I certainly didn’t. I can already tell it is going to be a great chance to learn about Germany, but also new ways of looking at the world. Whether be it through the eyes of a U.S. Southerner or a Berliner.

BTW — I finally learned what RIAS is. Started as a radio station during the time when there were sectors in Berlin, including Soviet and American. Radio In (haha — or is it International) American Sector. Once the wall fell, there was not an American sector so RIAS became a commission for German-American relations. And the radio station part of it is a little like a public radio station.

Gotta run.
