THIS IS SPRINGTIME?
Snow on Thirteenth Street Well it was April, anyway.

Snow storms, rain-fed ponds on subway platforms, invasion of Baghdad and the loss of a network correspondent marked the first days of Spring, 2003.

Thirteenth street in Manhattan on an April day
Spring was hardly a time of fiori and renewal. It is an understatement to say that it has been difficult to chronicle the strange month of April. Here we were, fully immersed in a war. Which apparently is now over. Hmmm. Certainly, you don't need Ruling Woman to talk about the war.

I found myself avoiding deep dialogues with folks about Operation Iraqi Freedom, because it was such a divisive topic. I measure the statistic of approval for the war against an alarming pre-war stat. Apparently, 52% of Americans believe that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the collapse of the towers. The propaganda machine worked well.

As for my exciting life these days -- it has been filled with working. Working. And, working. Squeezing in my extracurriculars, like knitting, studying Italian, running, cooking and writing. Well, there you have it. Full life.

The exciting days in the Fast Lane of RW.

Despite the snow -- which is now as long past as the War -- these are beautiful days in the city. The esplanade by the Hudson is filled with joggers, dog walkers, bicyclers, and strollers. Marred only by those damnable roller bladers. Is a city -- full of so many potholes that it makes the front pages of the New York Post -- really the place to be roller skating?

Life here on the site was fun in the month of April. Turns out my front-page chronicle of a high school field trip became popular with one particular community in America -- Federal Way. I heard from kids, parents, counselors and even a local newspaper editor who asked for my permission to print my story about the Decatur High Choir trip to Ground Zero. One reader recounted to me how her sister just happened to walk by the choir when it was singing Ave Maria along the viewing platform.

And, they say Manhattan is a big city. Ha!

Q - How do you keep memories of Rome fresh in your mind?

A - By drinking my caffè every morning from a lovely Sant' Eustachio espresso cup on a saucer.
